Claudio Ranieri has been appointed head coach of Roma until the end of the season – six months after announcing his retirement.

Ranieri has also taken on a role advising the Italian club’s owners and will help in the search for a permanent manager.

n

At the end of the season the 73-year-old will “transition into a senior executive role”, the club said.

Ranieri, who has managed his hometown club twice before including a temporary stint in 2019, retired in May after guiding Cagliari to survival.

His appointment comes after the sacking of Ivan Juric on Sunday.

Croatian Juric lasted just 12 matches after replacing Daniele de Rossi four games into this season. Former Italy midfielder De Rossi was manager for eight months following the departure of Jose Mourinho in January.

Ranieri has coached 18 clubs during his 37-year managerial career, as well as the Greece national team.

The crowning achievement of his career was the Premier League title he won with Leicester City in 2015-16.

Roma were linked with former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, who recently left his position as Saudi Arabia head coach.

Despite spending more than £80m during the summer transfer window, Roma are 12th in Serie A with 13 points after 12 games, and are 20th in the Europa League table with five points after four matches.

Roma’s next Serie A match is at Napoli on 24 November.

Jaywon fell out with Ayra Starr after trolls began using their viral picture together to mock him.

Speaking in a recent interview with News Central, Jaywon blamed Ayra Starr and her management for not calling the trolls to order.

“The Ayra Starr situation is unfortunate. We are not cool. People don’t get it. What would make me, Jaywon want to take a picture with Ayra Starr?

“Of course, she’s an amazing artist who has been making us [Nigerians] proud. So, it’s just love. I only wanted to support and celebrate her for the good work she’s doing.

“People also support and celebrate me, too. So when I see a young artist doing good, I want to be part of that celebration.

n

“We took a picture and it went viral, you and yours never said anything about it. The only thing your management did was to promote the picture back to back. Nobody is dumb.

“We know how the [music] industry works. People are saying she didn’t say anything about the picture. Of course, she didn’t say anything about the picture but she saw it trending everyday. Why would she not say something about it?

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, brought a Chinese, Zhengjia Jin, before an Ikeja Special Offences Court, for alleged bribery and N301 million fraud.

Jin was arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on retention of stolen property, bribery and stealing.

n

The EFCC Counsel, Ahmad Usman, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences between March 5 and Aug. 9 in Lagos.

n

He alleged that the defendant dishonestly retained an aggregate sum of N301 million in his account number- 1861390260 domiciled in Access Bank, which belonged to Golden Diamond Industrial Manufacturing Company Ltd.

The prosecutor submitted that the defendant while working at the company, accepted directly into his bank account the said money as kickbacks from vendors, thereby conferring undue advantage for himself.

n

The prosecutor said the defendant’s action was contrary to the company’s employee condition of service.

n

The anti-graft agency also stated that the defendant dishonestly converted the N301 million to his personal use.

n

According to the EFCC, the offences contravene Sections 83, 328, Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 and Sections 280 (2) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Defence Counsel, A.C. Ezenduka informed the court of a bail application.

n

Counsel to EFCC, however, told the court that the prosecution had not been served.

Justice Rahman Oshodi, remanded the defendant at Ikoyi Custodial Centre, pending hearing of his bail application.

Oshodi adjourned the case until Nov. 22 for a hearing of the bail application.

Many undergraduate students of University of Calabar residing in the male and female hostels have raised the alarm over several cracks on the walls of their hostels.

They expressed fears that as heavy rains persist in parts of the Calabar metropolis, the walls can fall in.

n

Their concerns were aired on the Unical International Radio phone-in programme, ‘What I Will Do If I Had Power to Run Unical,’ on Thursday evening.

n

They said halls 8 and 9 in particular are more delicate, maintaining that the dilapidated states of the hostels have remained so for several years.

A female student, who gave her name simply as Jane from Malabor Republic said:

“If I have power to be in charge of this school, the first thing I will do will be to embark on massive renovation of the hostels in Malabo Republic.

n

“There are many major cracks on the walls of hostel halls especially 1, 2, 4, 8, and 9.

n

“God forbid, these walls can cave in at any time and kill people’s children.

n

“These daily rains in Calabar can dangerously affect these hostels. I call on the school authorities to make hay while the sunshine.”

Another, a male student from another hostel complained about lack of electricity supply in the hostels.

n

He said this has allowed unhealthy activities to take place in the hostels.

n

They advised the students welfare body as well as the students Union government to work towards benefits of the students.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Florence Bankong Obi had earlier assured that the state of the hostels had been captured for action.UN

Kano State Police Command has arrested 82 suspects in connection with various crimes committed in the state from November 1 to November 14.

n

The suspects included kidnappers, armed robbers, thugs, phone snatchers and drug dealers.

n

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, while addressing newsmen at the command’s headquarters, Bompai, Kano, said the arrests were a result of a crime busting strategy adopted by the command.

n

“The implementation of these strategies have yielded positive results as they led to the crackdown on criminal networks such as curtailing remnants of thuggery (Daba) activities within Kano Metropolis.

n

“Other are dismantling of armed robbery syndicates along Jigawa-Kano and Bauchi-Kano borders and foiling kidnapping incidents along Kaduna-Kano and Katsina-Kano borders.

n

”Items recovered from the criminals included one AK-47 rifle and three locally made guns, 13 cutlasses and 16 knives, among others,’’ he said.

Speaking on behalf of the State Commissioner of Police, Salman Dogo, the PPRO said the achievements demonstrated the commitment of the command to maintaining law and order.

According to him, the command would continue to strengthen its multifaceted strategies that revolved around community policing, strategic communication in sensitizing the public on security matters.

Others were intelligence-led policing as well as targeted clearance operations that had effectively dismantled criminal networks operating especially along border local government areas of the state.

He commended Gov Abba Yusuf for donating 78 patrol vehicles to the command, which would significantly enhance its operational capacity and response time toward improved to people of the state.

The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Lere Olyainka has advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his ambition to govern the country in 2027.

Olayinka emphasized that the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate is not destined to lead Nigeria, suggesting that it would be futile for him to pursue another presidential bid.

Olayinka in a statement on Thursday in Abuja said

“The PDP presidential ticket will no longer be available to be wasted by serial betrayals of the party, who are obviously suffering the consequences of their past sins against the party and its members”.

“That Atiku is venerating himself for contesting PDP ticket with Wike and Tambuwal, people who were just a little above 25 as of 1993, when he contested the Social Democratic Party SDP presidential primary and came third, is the more reason he needs to go home and rest and stop acting like the proverbial cock that failed to realize that it is now elderly.”
